Top Component Qualification Questions In Manufacturing

When trying to decide which part to incorporate into a new product, a design engineer has to ask several important questions and address essential issues in order to ensure that the part is is the right one to use.

Is the component supply affected by long lead times or obsolescence issues? Are there multiple suppliers who can find the part for you? Does the part have a history of poor reliability or counterfeiting? Does the part fall under RoHS legislation?

Below is a link to an article that discusses these questions and identifies several others that can help component engineers save time and money for the business.

Tragic Japan Earthquake Affects Some Electronic Semiconductor Manufacturing Facilities

Our deepest condolences go out to the people of Japan following the tragic earthquake that struck northern Japan on 11th March 2011. The earthquake measured 8.9-magnitude on the Richter scale and they are now experiencing subsequent tidal waves (tsunami) throughout the country.

Electronic component manufacturers' have started to assess the damages to their electronic manufacturing facilities, after preliminary assessments they have reported the following:
  • Texas Instruments
The manufacturing site in Miho, Japan, about 40 miles northeast of Tokyo, suffered substantial damage. The fab. in Aizu-wakamatsu, about 150 miles north of Tokyo, was also damaged in the earthquake, equipment here is already being re-started. The company's third fab. in Hiki, about 50 miles south of Tokyo, was undamaged and is currently running at normal capacity. For more information please click here...

  • Molex
Have reported its employees in Japan were safe and that none of its three facilities were damaged in the massive earthquake. For more information please click here...
  • Murata
Employees have left the worksite and operation has been stopped. Murata will inform as soon as the restoration situation has been confirmed. There is no tsunami damage. For more information please click here...

  • Sony Group
Operations at several Sony Corporation and Sony Group sites and facilities have been affected by the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami. Sony has responded to reports of widespread power outages by voluntarily suspending operations at several sites. No significant injuries have been reported to employees working at these sites when the earthquake or tsunami occurred. For more information please click here...

  • ROHM
Operations at the OKI Semiconductor Miyagi facilities and ROHM Tsukuba facilities have been stopped as of 11:00am 13th March because of infrastructure supply problems. For more information please click here...
Although the overall semiconductor production hasn't been severely damaged on first inspection as first thought, analysts are predicting that the material supply and basic traffic reconstruction will impact more on the supply of semiconductor than production line damage. Therefore the overall supply is expected to be affected for the next two weeks due to unforeseen traffic difficulties.
